Computers Powered By Poop

Today almost everything runs on electricity. We use electricity to run trains, cook, lighting and so much more. Thus it is very important that people are able to know where they can get all the required electricity. People are able to tap energy from alternative sources of energy to help relieve the common sources of electricity.

Many companies are trying their best to try and cut down their electricity consumption. A good example would be Google. Google consumes a lot of energy. Google searches require the same energy that an 11 watt bulb requires when it's on for an hour. So one can be able to estimate how much energy is required for the Google servers and all other equipment to run. Thus Google has tried to cut their energy costs by developing advanced cooling methods and using energy saving techniques.

Others companies are also following the same trend. For example HP. It presented a paper to the 4th international conference on energy sustainability that describes how HP plans how they will use manure of cows to power their data centres. The title of the paper is design of Farm Waste-Driven supply Side Infrastructure for Data centers.

The manure that would be used will be from midsized dairy farms. Electricity will be derived form it by putting it through an anaerobic digester. The heat that is derived from this process would be used to power the turbines of the data centers cooling system. The electricity that is derived from this process will be used to power the data center. The temperature of the anaerobic digester would be regulated by the waste heat that is generated by the data center. This process ensures that there is maximum efficiency. This process also produces enough energy to be able to run the dairy farm. Thus one not only saves power use by the data centers but also the dairy farm.

According to HP, a dairy farm with about 10000 cows produces approximately 200000 tones of manure in a year. The manure produces methane gas. According to research this gas is more detrimental to the environment than carbon dioxide. The manure also pollutes the environment by polluting the rivers and streams. Thus HP using this manure to produce electricity will greatly improve the environment as it gets rid of this pollutant.

Other than reducing pollution, this process will also help boost the economy of the farms. The farms will be able to use this same electricity to run their farms and also earn huge chunks of money by selling the manure to be used elsewhere to produce the electricity. The farms can earn approximately two million dollars annually from selling the power that they produce.

KUANTAN: All pot-bellied and overweight policemen in the state will soon be summoned to attend daily exercise routines to whip them into shape while all other personnel will have to go for weekly aerobics sessions.

Pahang police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Sharifuddin Abdul Ghani said the move will enable “out-of-shape” police personnel to carry out their work effectively.

“I am aware that there are personnel in the force who are pot-bellied and overweight.

“As police personnel, it will be difficult for them to discharge their duties professionally (if they are overweight).

“So, I want all these personnel to undergo training and exercise daily to keep their weight in check.

“A good and healthy body is pertinent for uniformed personnel to serve the public,” he said after a walkabout at Kuantan Parade yesterday.

Also present were Semambu assemblyman Datuk Pang Tsu Ming, Teruntum assemblyman Chang Hong Seong, Kuantan MCA division chief Datuk Ti Lian Ker and Pahang Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation chairman Datuk Johnny Ch’ng.

DCP Sharifuddin said all personnel were now required to take part in weekly activities such as aerobic exercise and complete a 2.4km run every month.

He said in addition, they were required to undergo various health checks and measure their body mass index to meet the stipulated requirement.

On a separate matter, he said his main target after becoming the top cop in the state was to reduce the crime index to meet the KPI set out by the police force.

“We are emulating the move by Selangor police to initiate walkabouts and more police presence in the streets,” he said.

On the use of synthetic drugs among youths and students, he said the situation in Pahang was under control.

DCP Sharifuddin said under the Ops Payung, police had set up two mobile beat bases in Air Putih and Kampung Jawa with three personnel each.

He said two of them would be assigned to do their rounds and another stationed at the base to monitor the situation there.

A woman who was pronounced dead by doctors came alive during her funeral procession – two days later.

She reportedly stirred and stood up while family members were burning firecrackers in accordance with local custom in the small Indian village of Vepachettu in Allipuram, about 50km from Hyderabad, Tamil Nesan reported.

On Wednesday, Pinnitla Varalakshmi had been admitted to the King George’s Hospital after she collapsed at her house while attending to her daily chores.

Doctors pronounced her dead on arrival and issued a death certificate.

While her “body” was being carried in a funeral procession on Friday, mourners saw her waking up, sending shivers down their spine. A relative, Nageswara Rao, said ambulance staff noticed her pulse and took her to a private hospital.

She was later pronounced dead again.

> A poor farm labourer from a remote village in Cuddalore, a district in Tamil Nadu, handed over her baby to a home run by a Christian missionary in Puducherry after her husband died in 1968.

The two-year-old baby was baptised, christened Jasmine and given to a childless Belgian couple for adoption.

More than 40 years later on Saturday, Jasmine had a tearful reunion with her mother at the missionary’s branch in Karaikal, Makkal Osai reported.

Jasmine, married with two children, flew from Belgium to India about 15 days ago with her husband and visited the home run by the missionary.

I never saw it coming, says feng shui master who lost left hand

GEORGE TOWN: Feng shui master Th’ng Keat Seong, whose left hand was chopped off in a vicious attack on Monday, says he really did not see it coming.

Th’ng admitted he did not get any premonition that something bad would happen.

“I am a feng shui expert. I don’t predict the future as I’m not a fortune teller,” he said.

Th’ng, 44, offers consultancy services to his clients and has his own shop selling feng shui items in Penang Times Square shopping mall,

He claimed there was someone out there who did not want him in the business due to jealousy.

Th’ng said he was walking to his car after dinner at a restaurant when he was attacked at Jalan Lintang Emas, near Jalan Besi, at about 8pm on Monday night.

Blood stains found on the car boot indicated that his assailants could have held his hand there before chopping it off.

“It all happened so fast and I can’t really recollect what happened, or how the assailants looked like.

“All I can remember is that someone yanked my left arm from behind and I felt a searing pain. The next thing I knew, my left hand was missing and there was a lot of blood,” said Th’ng, who is right handed, when met at the the Gleneagles Medical Centre yesterday.

> Berita Harian reported that a gunman who tried to rob a goldsmith shop in Dungun, Terengganu, had to flee empty-handed after a glass display case he shot at 11 times failed to break.

State Acting CID chief Supt K. Manoharan said the gunman had entered the shop in Jalan Sura Gate at 5.30pm on Thursday, wearing a ski mask and gloves and carrying a sling bag.

He said the man had aimed an automatic gun at the staff, who however managed to escape by running to the back of the shop.

Supt Manoharan said the suspect then fired 11 shots at the glass case containing the jewellery but it did not break.

“When he failed to break the glass, he fled through the back door.

“It is believed that he made his getaway in a waiting car,” he said.

He added that although a closed-circuit television camera caught the gunman in his act, police have yet to identify him.
